Breaking News – Hon. Gitonga Mukunji filed a petition at the Embu Law Courts to halt the auction of Gakundu Coffee Factory properties by the Commodities Fund. The factory, which serves over 10,000 farmers, has become a cornerstone of growth and development under its new leadership.

Legal Action Taken

Hon. Mukunji’s legal team has successfully obtained a court order referring the case to the High Court for hearing. This decisive action aims to prevent the auction and protect the livelihoods of thousands of coffee farmers who depend on the factory.

Background and Call for Government Intervention

Gakundu Coffee Factory and other coffee factories in Embu face significant financial challenges, largely due to debts owed to the Commodities Fund. Recognizing this, Hon. Mukunji emphasized the following:

    • The government is being urged to fast-track the implementation of these waivers to provide immediate relief to farmers.
  2. Parliamentary Action:
    • Hon. Mukunji plans to seek a statement in Parliament from Cabinet Secretary for Co-operatives, Hon. Wycliffe Oparanya, to clarify the status of debt waivers for Gakundu and other coffee factories in Embu County.

Protecting Farmers and Boosting the Coffee Sector

Hon. Mukunji reiterated the importance of safeguarding Gakundu Coffee Factory, which plays a pivotal role in supporting over 10,000 farmers and driving economic growth in the region. “The survival of Gakundu Coffee Factory is not just about business—it’s about protecting livelihoods and securing the future of coffee farming in Embu,” he stated.
